Apple & Honey Harvest

Apple & Honey Harvest Quince Honey Farm October 2022

Celebrate harvest time at Quince Honey Farm this October half term!

Autumn marks the end of the growing season, where annual crops are harvested for food and animal feed, an important date in the British farming calendar. To celebrate the change in seasons and the bringing in of the harvest there have been many weird and wonderful traditions! Did you know that the word ‘harvest’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for autumn, ‘haerfest’?

Harvest time involves a whole array of crops, including apples, with the apple orchard being a quintessential scene from the British countryside. October is a key apple picking time in Britain when growers and gardeners harvest their apple crops. Around 2,200 varieties of apples have been developed in the UK, of all sorts of tastes, textures, shapes and sizes.

Quince Honey Farm’s first ever Apple and Honey Harvest will embrace the old traditions of the autumn season and share the customs and old ways of the apple harvest. Come and see our Apple Show, a live demonstration of an apple mill and apple press using the fruit from the orchard at Quince Honey Farm, and learn about the traditions of the apple harvest. There will be opportunities to get a little hands-on yourself too!

Harvesting of our heather honey will also be underway in the Honey Factory where you can watch as this delicious honey is extracted from our honeybee hives, learn about the process, and maybe try some straight from the hive!

Our Nectary Restaurant will be joining in the harvest celebrations by cooking and baking up some specials, featuring (of course) apples and honey!

On selected days, our friends at the More Mead Co will be here to offer samples of their deliciously sweet mead, some of which is made using our own honey.

All this, PLUS the usual offer from a visit to Quince Honey Farm where you will learn about bees, honey and everything in between!  Face painting and fancy dress competitions will also be held on selected days in the Play Hive.
