We were very sad to learn that Ilfracombe Tourist Information Centre will be closing for the Winter, and that it's future is uncertain, having been placed in to receivership.
I started my Tourist Information career over 30 years ago at Ilfracombe TIC, in it's former premises near Capstone, and was involved in moving it to The Landmark Theatre in the 90's. In those days, TICs received funding and support from organisations such as the West Country Tourist Board and local authorities. How times have changed! Funding has been slashed over the years and sadly Ilfracombe TIC is the latest victim of these cuts.
I worked with Marie, the current Manager at Ilfracombe TIC, for several years, and we have stayed in touch, sharing ideas and supporting each other through the challenges of running a TIC on a shoestring! What a huge loss for the Ilfracombe Tourist Industry, now that her role no longer exists. Her expertise, local knowledge and customer service has been exceptional over the last 28 years ... I only wish we could take her on here, but sadly don't have the budget! Wishing you well Marie on your new adventure, wherever that may be.
I sincerely hope that a new Information Service provision can be launched next season for Ilfracombe in some shape or form - if you are a local business in Ilfracombe, and you are offered the opportunity to support any new TIC venture, I urge you to get involved ... it is such a vital service for your customers!
And a word of caution to businesses local to Woolacombe & Mortehoe ... use us or lose us! Remember, if you support us, we support you. A massive thank you to all those who currently support us by being members of the Woolacombe & Mortehoe Tourism Association ... we wouldn't be here without you!
